Affordable Auto Insurance — Paying Less With Moving Violations

by Chimpuriche Chihunrumnanya

Although it’s true that moving violations will raise your rates, it’s also true that you can enjoy cheap auto insurance rates if you know and do a few things…

1. Don’t be too hard on yourself and don’t see yourself as a reckless driver because of this. That image won’t help.

The mere fact that you understand that being guilty of moving violations doesn’t make you a villain gives you the opportunity to review your actions and options intelligently. Furthermore, you’ll be in a better position to avoid a repeat.

2. Sometimes the error is on the part of the traffic officer. In such cases you’ll do well to challenge it in a traffic court. And don’t forget to inform your agent if the court rules in your favor. Your rates should be lowered accordingly. They aren’t lowered satisfactorily, shop for another insurer.

3. Do you know that some drivers pay high rates for their moving violations for more than three years? This should NOT be the case as these violations are removed from your driving records after three years (Or five years in some states).

If you fall into this category, call your agent right away. You are overdue for a downward review of your rate. On the other hand, you can apply to another insurer who has better rates for you.

4. If you agree to take traffic school your moving violation can be dismissed. This is available in some states and only for some types of moving violations.

5. Although all auto insurers specialize in auto insurance, different companies are more specialized in certain profiles than others. If you get insurers who focus on high risk drivers, you may get better rates as they have a better understanding of your profile.

Insurers are always adjusting rates. Furthermore, they all do NOT have exactly the same rate quotes for similar profiles. Therefore, you’ll save a lot if you take out some time to get and compare quotes from a wide range of insurance companies.
